  • I get up at 7am.'Get up' aqui significa 'levantar-se', não 'conseguir cima'.
  • She gave up smoking last year.'Give up' quer dizer 'desistir de', diferente de 'dar para cima'.

Por exemplo, 'turn off the light' pode virar 'turn the light off'. Mas 'look after the baby' não pode virar 'look the baby after'.

Quando o objeto é um pronome, a partícula quase sempre vem depois do pronome: 'turn it off', não 'turn off it'.

  • Please turn off (1) ______ the light.Pode ser: 'turn off the light' ou 'turn the light off', as duas estão corretas.
  • He looks after (2) ______ the kids every day.Aqui, não se separa: 'look after the kids' e não 'look the kids after'.

  • She turned down (3) ______ the invitation.'Turn down' significa recusar. Não é separável.
  • We set up (4) ______ the meeting for tomorrow.'Set up' significa organizar ou marcar algo.
  • They ran out of (5) ______ milk.'Run out of' significa acabar (algo).
  • Can you pick up (6) ______ the kids at school?'Pick up' significa buscar alguém ou algo.
  • He gave up (7) ______ smoking last month.'Give up' é desistir, abandonar um hábito.
